October is finally here which can only mean one thing, Halloween! Every year I try to plan my costume ahead of time but, I usually end up waiting until the last minute to decide who I want to be. Which then leads me to search through empty shelves in the costume aisle, forced to throw together a last-minute look. Last year I had an idea of who I wanted to be, but since I was so indecisive and waited until the night before I ended up being a sexy kitty. The year before that, I threw together a 70s inspired look and went as Willona Woods from Good Times.
Nowadays, it’s pretty tough to find an original costume. Just when you thought you’ve created a kind look, someone out there in social media land uploads a similar-looking costume. Now, I just look at it as finding something that you love that will either cause a good laugh or stir up a good fright. It’s about taking that look and putting your own spin on it.
1. Morticia Addams
Recently a photo of Christina Ricci dressed as Morticia Addams hit the internet. Rumor has it that the photo was photoshopped, but it did trigger inspiration for a costume idea.
What to wear: All you need is a long black dress to recreate this look. To make it more creative, you can add your own modern-day spin to it.
2. Justice (Poetic Justice)
Seeing Janet Jackson with those box braids in Poetic Justice, I knew I had to have them. After getting my braids done, you couldn’t tell me anything. I put my braids in the same ponytail as she had hers and I also had a hat like the one she wore in the movie. Now that boxed braids have made a comeback, this is a pretty easy look to create.
What to wear: Of course you need braids. A pair of 90s style jeans that come above the belly button, a crop top, and some 90s style shoes or boots. There’s room to be creative when creating this look.
3. Sandra Clark (227)
If you love thrifting and 80s style clothing, then you can totally rock this look. Sandra wore lots of form-fitting clothes that showed off her curvaceous figure.
What to wear: A form-fitting vintage 80s style dress or a matching skirt suit, throw on some faux fur, mix in her over the top personality and you have Saaaandra. Don’t forget the accessories and big hair.
4. Whitley Gilbert (A Different World)
Lately, I’ve been binge-watching A Different World on Netflix, so I’ve become somewhat borderline obsessed with Whitley’s style. Though she was just in college, Whitley dressed like she already working in the corporate world.
What to wear: Whitley wore a lot of blazers, blouses, skirts, and tailored pants. I’m sure you can pull this look together effortlessly with vintage pieces from your local vintage/thrift store. To complete your look, don’t forget a southern accent.
5.Grace Jones
Looking to channel your inner diva? Well, look no further than the Iconic Grace Jones. Her androgynous appearance makes her unique. She wore lots of square-cut, angular padded clothing.
What to wear: Blazers with shoulder pads (square shoulders), hooded pieces, and stilettos. With this costume, it’ll require a trip to your local vintage/thrift store (unless you already own these items) and lots of creativity. Plus a strong “beat” face is required to pull this look off.
These are just a few ideas to get you thinking.
Any suggestions, I would love to hear!

I was talking about this topic with my friends last week, and as we’re a team of three which may eventually grow up to 5 or 6 people, we knew we couldn’t be sexy kitties anymore, but still not spend too much money on our costumes.
We got to the idea of really homemade Disney Villains! Talking about minimum things we should buy and things we could borrow from each other, I was (self)assigned the Cruella de Vil costume which I’ll be doing with a little black dress I already have around my closet, a similar coat to hers (closet, too) and really fancy makeup and hair.
I think the key is NOT about who/what you dress, but to look for the best and budget-friendly ideas!
See ya!
