Another Lesson In Black History…Which Major Fashion Magazine Was The First To Feature Only Black Models?
Vogue Italia was the first Fashion magazine ever to print an issue featuring only black models, which hit news stands in July 2008. On the cover were models Liya Kebede, Sesilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn, and Naomi Campbell in which they were all featured in the fold-out, photographed by Steven Meisel. The magazine featured topics related to black women in the arts and entertainment. Some of the models who were photographed for this issue were Alek Wek, Alva Chin, Arlenis Sosa Pena, Chanel Iman, Gail O’Neil, Iman, Karen Alexander, Tyra Banks, Veronica Webb, Yasmin Warsame, and Toccara Jones, the first black plus-size model to be in the pages of the high fashion magazine. There were 100 pages dedicated to black models.
Vogue Italia “Black” issue became the highest-selling issue of Italian Vogue ever, the magazine ran out of print twice, which marked the first time in history that the magazine reprinted an issue to satisfy demand.
