Meet Designer B. Michael
“I love to know that I design for women that have an agenda. [M]any of the women who wear my clothes are very powerful in terms of running their own businesses, or sitting on boards, or doing great philanthropic work.”
B. Michael’s inspiration came from his mother, her creativity and sense of style were passed on to him. While pursuing a career in fashion, he designed hats under Oscar de la Renta, Louis Feraud among others. His big break came when he was given the opportunity to do the millinery work for the 1980s hit television drama Dynasty. With his success on the show, he went on and launched his own millinery line in 1989. Years later, B launched his first couture collection in 1999.
The designer describes his signature style as “A modern approach to glamour. It is also about achieving a very sophisticated, yet simplistic look. A woman who wears B. Michael knows how to wear a basic dress and make it look glamorous.”
His clothes have been worn by many A-list black celebrities such as Victoria Rowell, Cicely Tyson, Lena Horne, Lynn Whitfield, and Angela Bassett among others.
Whitney Houston’s dress was designed by B.Michael for the movie sparkle.
He also had the opportunity to design the costumes for Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks in the remake movie Sparkle.
