What Does Dressing Your Age Really Mean?

Hey, fashion besties! Let’s talk about something that has been on my mind lately, dressing your age.

At 43, I’ve heard enough rules about what women are supposedly too old to wear.

That miniskirt is too short. That crop top is too young. That color is too bold. That outfit is too sexy. Apparently, once women reach a certain age, we’re expected to quietly remove all the fun from our closets.

But who made these rules? And as far as I’m concerned, fashion rules were made to be broken.

And what does dressing your age really mean?

Because I don’t believe dressing your age means covering everything up, ignoring every trend, or trading your personality for a closet filled with clothes that are considered “appropriate for your age.” Cause girl what!

To me, dressing your age means dressing for the woman you are today, and that woman is constantly evolving.

Wearing the miniskirt because who gon’ check me, boo?

Your Age Is Not a Dress Code

Fashion besties, turning 40 does not mean you suddenly wake up hating miniskirts, bold colors, skinny jeans, crop tops, or statement pieces. Your personal style does not expire just because you had another birthday, because that would be crazy. As women, we may have different responsibilities, lifestyles, and bodies than we did ten years ago. But we still deserve to feel beautiful, confident, sexy, playful, and stylish.

And baby let me tell you, getting older does not mean our personalities expire.

Now, we may not style every piece exactly the way we did ten or twenty years ago, and that’s perfectly okay. Our style is supposed to change with us.

Maybe you wear your miniskirt with tights and a tailored or oversized blazer. Maybe you pair a crop top with high-waisted pants. Maybe you take one of the season’s biggest trends and make it work with the classic pieces already hanging in your closet.

That is not trying to look younger. That is knowing how to make fashion work for you.

Dress for the Life You Have Right Now

If dressing your age means anything, it should mean dressing for your real life.

Do your clothes work for the places you actually go? Do they make you feel comfortable and confident? Can you move through your day without constantly pulling, tugging, or adjusting your outfit?

The goal is not to dress like the woman you were ten years ago. It is also not to dress like the woman society thinks you should become.

The goal is to dress for the woman you are right now.

You may be a mother, a professional, a creative, an entrepreneur, or all of the above. So Bestie, your wardrobe should work for your lifestyle without erasing your personality. Because being practical does not mean you have to be boring.

Sometimes It’s the Fit, Not Your Age

Let’s be honest. Sometimes an outfit simply does not work, and that’s perfectly normal. But your age has absolutely nothing to do with it. It may be the fit, the fabric, the proportions, or the way the piece is styled.

As a petite woman, I already know that proportions can make or break an outfit. A hemline may need to be shortened. A blazer may need tailoring. An oversized trend may need to be balanced differently on a petite frame.

That does not mean I am too old to wear it. It simply means I need to style it in a way that works for my body. Let me say that again for the people in the back: I need to style it in a way that works for my body.

Before deciding that you are too old for something, try a different size, change the shoes, add a layer, or have the piece tailored.

A well-fitting outfit will always do more for you than something you chose only because it seemed age appropriate.

You Are Still Allowed to Experiment

Personal style is not something you discover once and keep forever. It evolves because you evolve. Finding your personal style is a journey, not a destination.

You are allowed to try a new trend. You are allowed to wear something unexpected. You are allowed to change your mind after seeing how a piece fits into your wardrobe.

Not every fashion experiment will work, and that is perfectly okay. Style is supposed to be explored, so experiment and have fun with it.

Instead of asking, “Am I too old to wear this?” ask yourself:

  • Does this feel like me?
  • Do I feel confident wearing it?
  • Does it work for my lifestyle?
  • Can I style it with pieces I already own?
  • Do I genuinely love it?
  • Am I avoiding it because I dislike it, or because I am worried about what other people might say?

But do we really care what other people think?

That last question is important because sometimes other people’s opinions stop us from wearing what we actually love. Oftentimes, we don’t truly believe we’re too old for something. We’re simply afraid that someone else will think we are.

But bestie, they are not wearing the outfit. You are.

Confidence Does Not Have an Age Limit

Women are constantly told to become quieter and less visible as we get older.

I am not interested in doing that, especially when it comes to my clothes.

Style is one of the ways we express who we are before we ever say a word. If a bold coat, red lipstick, miniskirt, statement shoe, or leopard print makes you feel like yourself, wear it. WEAR IT!

You do not have to prove that you still “have it.” You also do not have to dress younger to show that you are still stylish.

You simply have to stop believing that confidence and personal style belong to one age group.

So, What Does Dressing Your Age Really Mean?

To me, dressing your age means dressing with intention and self-awareness, not limiting yourself because of a number. Aaliyah said it best: “Age ain’t nothing but a number.”

It means understanding your body, being honest about who you are in this season of your life, and choosing clothes that represent the woman you are today.

It also means knowing when a piece needs a little tailoring, when a trend simply isn’t for you, and when an outdated fashion rule needs to be completely ignored. Because who made these rules anyway, bestie?

So, what I’m trying to say is, girl…

Wear the mini.

Try the trend.

Rock the bold color.

Buy the statement coat.

And yes, wear the leopard print because leopard is always a neutral around here.

The goal is not to look younger or older. The goal is to look like yourself, on purpose.

Now tell me, fashion besties: What is one thing you love wearing that someone might say you’re “too old” for? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

They looked good, but something still felt like a no. I’m learning that “cute” isn’t always enough to earn a place in my closet. #fashionstyledetroit #fittingroom #fashion

Cute is not enough, bestie. Does it fit your style? Does it work with your closet? Can you wear it five different ways? These are the questions we’re asking before fall shopping. #fashionstyledetroit #fallfashion #anthropologie

I hear so many people say, “I don’t really have the budget to shop right now.”

And guess what? You don’t have to.

You do not need to constantly buy new clothes to be stylish. Style is about what you do with what you already have…like mixing pieces differently, playing with accessories, trying new combinations, and actually wearing what’s in your closet.

Your budget might say “no shopping right now,” but that doesn’t mean your style has to be put on pause.

Since ya girl is a certified sweetaholic (sugar addict if you will), trust me when I say… this was GOOD good. Listen, thank goodness this was on a Sunday because calories don’t count on the weekend and I will not be taking any further questions at this time. But this strawberry cheesecake from @nostalgiabakeries was totally WORTH IT.
