Another Lesson In Black History…Who Was The First Black Male Designer To Become Successful In The Fashion Industry?

Willi Smith was considered to be the most successful African-American clothing designer during his time.

Wili Smith

Willi Donnell Smith was born on February 29, 1948, in Philadelphia. Growing up he took inspiration from his parents and grandmother, who always dressed fashionably stylish despite being on limited budgets.

While in high school Smith studied commercial art at Mastbaum Technical High School in Philadelphia. After graduating high school, he enrolled at the Philadelphia College of Art to study fashion illustration in 1962. While in college he realized he wanted to be a designer.

In 1965 Smith earned two scholarships to the Parsons School of Design in New York. While in New York he began doing freelance work for the designer Arnold Scaasi and the Bobbie Brooks sportswear company. In 1967 he quit school to pursue his love of fashion full time. In 1969 his name begin appearing on labels of clothing made by Digits, a sportswear company.

In 1973 Smith and his sister Toukie, founded their own clothing company.  With little experience in business, they soon saw their enterprise fail. He continued doing freelance work until 1976, when he entered into another business partnership, this time with Laurie Mallet, with whom he co-founded WilliWear.

Smith’s eclectic, whimsical, and inventive designs attracted the attention of fashion insiders, while customers responded favorably, the newly formed company soon became established in the industry.

In the beginning stages, WilliWear produced only women’s clothing, until 1978 when a men’s line was added. Smith won a Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award for women’s fashion in 1983 and a Cutty Sark Menswear Award in 1985.

His style has been described as “street couture” he emphasized that he was not designing “for young people who like to look alike,” but rather for people who wanted “real clothes” but with a sense of designer fashion.

By the time of Smith’s death in 1987, WilliWear was selling over $25 million worth of clothing a year.

”I don’t design clothes for the Queen, but for the people who wave at her as she goes by.” – Willi Smith

Unpopular fashion opinion: Not every fashion trend looks good on everybody.

I’ve learned that chasing every trend doesn’t build great style knowing what works for your body, lifestyle, and personal style does.

The best outfits aren’t always the trendiest. They’re the ones that make you feel confident.

Agree or disagree? What’s one fashion trend you just couldn’t get behind?

I told myself I wasn’t buying another pair of sunglasses.

Then I tried them on.

At what point does it become a collection and not a shopping problem?

Unpopular fashion opinion: Looking expensive has nothing to do with how much you spent.

Some of the best outfits I’ve ever worn weren’t the most expensive…they just fit well, felt good, and were styled with intention.

A designer label won’t fix bad styling, but confidence can elevate almost anything.

Agree or disagree?

What’s your unpopular fashion opinion?

Original price: $170

My price: $59.97

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but that’s not spending money… that’s being financially responsible.

Girl math or smart shopping? Be honest. 😂

What up doe? Fashion besties, can we talk about how hard it is to meet new people as an adult?

Between work, responsibilities, and everything else life throws our way, making new friends isn’t always easy. That’s why I love events like this. There’s something so refreshing about stepping outside your comfort zone, meeting new people, and making real life connections.

I came for the content, the donuts, and the good vibes…but I left with some great conversations and new connections.

Noowwwww…let’s talk about the food!! The donuts were good, and I especially loved the Strawberry Shortcake Layered Custard. But the real star of my evening? The Crispy Ramen Original Rice Hotdog lightly sprinkled with sugar. I’m officially hooked and already planning my next visit.

A big thank you to @DetroitFinds313 and @mochinut_berkely for hosting such a fun and welcoming event.

Now tell me, fashion besties, do you find it easy or hard to make new friends as an adult?

Today called for an easy black dress, pink jelly mules, and zero overthinking. Anybody else feel like their whole mood changes when the outfit is good?

Anybody else love a three-piece set because it takes all the thinking out of getting dressed? Just add shoes and go. That’s my type of getting ready.

@Fabletics always has the cutest workout sets 💙💙💙

Someone told my 5’1 self I’m not petite because I’m not skinny.

Respectfully, petite means short, not skinny. If I’m not petite, then why has every pair of pants I’ve ever owned been too long unless I specifically buy short or petite sizes?

Petite girls, back me up in the comments

Petite is a height category, not a body type. My 5’1” self didn’t stop being petite just because I’m not a size 2.

Fashion besties, can we normalize getting overdressed?

I didn’t buy these clothes just to save them for a special occasion. Life is the occasion.

If I want to wear the cute dress, the statement coat, or the heels just to grab coffee, I’m doing it. The older I get, the more I realize style is meant to be enjoyed, not saved.

Tell me I’m not the only one. What’s the most “extra” place you’ve worn a cute outfit?

POV: I’ve always been too anxious to go sit in a restaurant by myself, but I decided to add it to my bucket list and finally do it.
So today, I took myself out on a solo date, ordered what I wanted, enjoyed my meal, and honestly? I wish I would’ve done this sooner.
The whole time I was thinking, “Why was I so scared of this?”
Be honest, fashion besties... have you ever taken yourself out to eat alone, or is it still on your bucket list? #fashionstyledetroit
